Social media has grown into a huge part of people’s day to day lives, whether that be as a source of entertainment or a source of income. Many individuals have utilized it in their own individual niches and greatly succeeded from doing so by maximizing their outreach. Here’s some ideas for how you can market yourself as a performer on your social media accounts!

Why should performers use social media?
Many performers are hesitant to post on social media because it can feel awkward or self-promotional. However, social media has become one of the easiest ways to connect with other artists, share your work, and build a personal brand. Whether you're hoping to grow your network, showcase your talents, or simply document your journey, having an online presence can help open doors.
Social media also allows people to get to know you beyond your headshot and résumé. Directors, fellow performers, and even prospective students often enjoy seeing the person behind the performer. By sharing aspects of your training, performances, and everyday life, you're giving others a chance to connect with you in a more authentic way.
The goal isn't to become the next viral influencer. The goal is simply to make it easier for people to find your work, support your journey, and remember who you are.
Stay on top of trending audios/video ideas
Trends rise and fall rapidly, whether they be theatre based trends or not, so saving ideas and planning out when to curate bite sized videos is integral to maximizing your outreach.
Tips:
Create a folder where you just save audios/videos that you want to re-create for your own account
Make a posting/filming schedule in your notes to hold you accountable
Show off your school or training program
Prospective students turn more and more to social media in order to inform their schooling decisions, meaning that creating videos about your university or training program can gain great traction!
Tips:
Point out specific aspects of your program that make it unique
Film Day in My Life videos that especially focus on the fact that you are attending your
specific program
Displaying parts of your day that aren’t theatre based is great too to show off a work-life balance of sorts
Develop your own unique series
Formulating an idea for your own series idea can boost your outreach and inspire other fellow creators to follow suit.
Tips:
Starting with a series that other people do (ex. 30 day posting challenge) can help you to get used to the idea of engaging in posting so regularly before curating your own
Thoroughly explain the guidelines of your series and offer a brief overview of these
guidelines in each videos that precedes
Balance your performance posting with your “life” posting
Although being a performer is a huge part of your life, it’s not all that makes you up as a person and people like to see the unique quirks that make up different people!
Tips:
If you’re posting your performance reels on social media, don’t forget to also post your regular life photo dumps or casual fit checks!
Don’t be shy about what else you do other than performance, or how you bring these
other aspects of yourself into your theatre work
Don't Worry About Having a Huge Following
One of the biggest misconceptions about social media is that you need thousands of followers for your content to matter. In reality, consistency is often more important than audience size. A smaller account with genuine engagement can be far more impactful than a larger account with little connection to its audience.
Remember that every performer starts somewhere. The creators and performers you see with large followings today likely began by posting videos that only a handful of people watched. The important thing is to keep creating, keep sharing, and allow yourself the opportunity to grow over time.
You never know who might come across your content. A future classmate, collaborator, director, or friend could discover your account because you decided to share your work.
Instagram, TikTok, Youtube- The Sky is The Limit!
No matter what social media platform you primarily utilize, these track across all of them!
Posting can be something that brings you joy and connecting with others online who have similar interests or career paths as you is one of the many blessings of being active on social media! You have no idea who you could meet or influence through your posts, so just make the content!
